FPSO Integrity Strategy

One of the UK's first RBI strategies for a marine vessel

Project overview

Imrandd was tasked with developing and implementing a new full integrity management strategy for a new-build FPSO, ahead of deployment in-field. The scope encompassed a full review of all components and equipment, defining the likelihood and consequence of potential failures, and originating a strategy to manage the consequences. In close consultation with the operator and DNV, Imrandd implemented one of the UK's first class-approved RBI strategies for a marine vessel.

The challenge

The operator's high-level goal was to consistently improve risk management and resource allocation across its operations. With support from Imrandd they set out to instil this spirit of improvement and efficiency in operations from the outset.

Taking an RBI approach to integrity management was not standard practice for marine vessels at the time. However, the traditional class approach to FPSO hull integrity management was being broadly challenged, including by class societies, due to the operational differences between FPSOs and traditionally classed marine vessels.

The solution

RBI strategy is not solely reliant on inspection as a means of monitoring risks. Imrandd teams assess the wider picture on the asset, incorporating an appropriate range of other data sources to ensure the strategy is balanced and robust. For this scope, the team made certain that every element was fully explored, reviewed and justified, chairing all relevant risk assessments, peer review and risk management sessions.

With an RBI approach as the foundation, Imrandd's team was confident that the strategy would still meet the highest regulator standards while better accommodating the efficiency in inspection and enactment planning required by the operator.

Benefits

  • Robust identification and assessment of risks accompanied by a defensible and actionable strategy to monitor and manage these
  • Efficient risk management and resource allocation, saving time and money across the future asset life
  • Blueprint for asset integrity management, replicating good practice and efficiencies

Conclusion

Working closely together, Imrandd, the operator and DNV put in place one of the first class-approved, RBI-based, full integrity management strategies for an FPSO. Our efforts in defining a strategy that went beyond the standard were appreciated by both operator and regulator.

Following five successful years of implementation, Imrandd and the client are working together to prepare for the approval process with DNV for the next five-year cycle.
